(WTVR/CNN) – Actor Neil Patrick Harris said he discussed hosting the Late Show with officials from CBS, but ultimately decided he was not the right person for the job.

Harris, whose hit CBS comedy How I Met Your Mother came to an end this year, told Howard Stern he thought he would get bored with the repetition of a nightly show. Harris, a regular host of awards shows, said he would be interested in hosting a weekly variety show.

Harris did not say when he and CBS discussed a Late Show hosting gig.

CBS chose comedian Stephen Colbert to take over the Late Show when David Letterman retires next year.
