(WTVR) -- Police were busy Friday morning responding to several accidents. Just before 2:00 a.m. state police were overseeing a crash along I-95 South, near the Atlee/Elmont exit. Investigators said the driver of a tractor-trailer hit a pole holding an overhead sign. The force from the crash caused the sign to wrap around the big rig, as it flipped over. Unfortunately the driver did not survive. As crews worked to clean up the area, traffic was backed up for several hours.

Nearly 15 miles away, off Chippenham Parkway South--near the Dalebrook Drive exit--there was another chaotic scene. Wet roads may be to blame for a driver allegedly hydroplaning, before going over a guard rail and into a ditch.

The weather may also be to blame for trees toppling over, including one at Riverside Drive. Crews worked quickly to clean it up.

AAA said there are several things drivers can do to stay safe; it includes taking things slow and giving yourself plenty of space between other drivers.
