NAGS HEAD, N.C. (WGHP) – The weather was sunny and brilliant Monday in North Carolina.

All the better to see the rare deep sea fish that washed up on a Nags Head beach in North Carolina on Monday.

The Lancetfish was found in Nags Head,  south ofJennette’s Pier, reports WHGP. It is an open ocean fish that rarely comes to shore.

Lancetfishes can grow up to almost seven foot in length.

Very little is known about their biology, though they are widely distributed in all oceans, except the polar seas, reports WGHP.

Lancetfishes possess a long and very high dorsal fin, soft-rayed from end to end, with an adipose fin behind it.

The dorsal fin has 41 to 44 rays and occupies the greater length of the back.

Daryl Law sent the photo to FOX8.Law said the fish was released live after being photographed.

It certainly doesn’t look like it would be very good to eat — sort of chewy looking.
