GLOUCESTER COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) — The search for a possible missing plane in Gloucester County after officials received an alert from a crash position indicator has been called off Friday evening.
“All units have searched and cleared the air, woods, water and roadways,” Virginia State Police’s Sergeant M. Anaya said in a news release.
Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office dispatchers told CBS 6 News that they have received an alert that a radio beacon was triggered in the northern end of the county near Allmondsville Road.
The emergency locator transmitter beacon, which is ejected from some types of planes just before a crash so that a homing signal can be sent to search crews, sounded around 3:50 p.m. that a plane that could have possibly went down.
Virginia State Police said Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport told the sheriffs office that they had received ELT’s (distress signal) from a plane.
“As of 5:30 p.m., with the combined efforts of Virginia State Police Troopers, Gloucester County Sheriff Deputies, and Gloucester Fire & EMS no plane has been found,” Virginia State Police’s Sergeant M. Anaya said in a news release. “A search of the area, as well as the West Point area, and adjacent areas continue.”
Anaya said there have been no reports of any missing plans.
