Teachers honored for amazing work in the classroom

RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) - James River High teacher Tara Brunyansky got a surprise in class Thursday when she was named Teacher of the Year for Chesterfield County Public Schools.

"It is the epitome of what a teacher tries to aspire to in their career,"  the chemistry said. "To be a representative of all of their colleagues is truly an honor."

Brunyansky has been a teacher in Chesterfield since 1996.

Watkins Elementary music teacher Chuck Rhode won the county's  Elementary School Teacher of the Year.

Henrico County honored several educators as well.

Audra Yerian, a kindergarten teacher at Sandston Elementary School, was named Henrico County Public Schools’ 2014 Gilman Teacher of the Year. Charles Cuccherini, a science teacher at J.R. Tucker High School, was named the division’s 2014 First-Year Teacher of the Year.

Deep Run High School instructional technology resource teacher Greg Metcalf, Donahoe Elementary School principal Joe Koontz and Henrico director of exceptional education Nyah Hamlett were named winners of the inaugural Chris Corallo Distinguished Leadership Award.

Corallo was a former assistant superintendent who died last year.
