YUBA CITY, Calif. (WTVR) -- California authorities said a girl who sold pot-laced brownies to raise money to go to prom could be deported over the crime.
Officials said 18-year-old Saira Munoz’s bake sale was going well until one student fell ill and had to be rushed to the hospital.
Munoz was convicted and sentenced to four years probation and nine days in jail with credit for time served. However, during Monday’s sentencing she learned she may face deportation.
That's because the young woman came to the U.S. in 2000 on a temporary visa and could be sent back to Mexico.
“People make mistakes,” Carlos Robles, a friend of the teen, told KOVR. “She was just a very positive person,” he said. “I just don’t like the turnout of this.”
The charge for selling pot was classified as a felony because Munoz enlisted the help of a minor to help sell the confections.
