Man arrested for murder after body found in burned car

POWHATAN COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) – Police have arrested a man for murder after they found human remains in a burned vehicle.

Juan Carlos Ayala Rivas, 29, is charged with 1st Degree Murder, Abduction, Arson and Grand Larceny in connection to the death of 24-year-old Jaime Cruz-Avila.

Cruz-Avila’s burned vehicle was found last month at Watkins Boat Landing in Powhatan. Cruz-Avila was reported missing in Henrico several days before his remains were discovered.

Police arrested Rivas on Friday in Chesterfield.

He is being held without bond at Powhatan Correctional Center and is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in Powhatan JDR Court.
