You may not be able to count on the weather this time of year but college basketball fan can certainly count on the rumors that fly during the spring Coach Shaka Smart watch.
Now that the Rams are out of the NCAA tournament Smart’s name has come up in just about every high profile coaching search. Published reports Monday afternoon said that both Marquette and Wake Forest asked for permission to talk to Smart about their openings.
The website 24-7.com reported that Marquette’s hiring of Coach Smart was imminent, and the CBS 6 Milwaukee affiliate reported that Smart “very well could become” the next Marquette basketball coach.
Locally, CBS 6 sources are skeptical of any such move, and sources have told CBS 6 Sports that the VCU Athletic Director Ed McLaughlin hasn’t been asked by anyone to officially talk to his coach and that nothing is imminent.
One thing we know for certain — Smart is still the head coach at VCU and was in his office at the Siegel Center today.
If you want a good breakdown of how much Smart makes currently, and how much he would make at Marquette, click here. Also, to get him out of his renegotiated contract that runs through 2023, it would cost at least $600,000.
As part of the deal, he will owe a $600,000 buyout to VCU if he leaves before April 30, 2014. In addition, any school he goes to must schedule a two-year home-and-home series with VCU or pay VCU $250,000.
Thus, Marquette could end up paying $850,000 before even considering a salary for Smart.
BUT, on to your Tweets. Which are absolutely hilarious AND contradictory. The rumors even forced the hack Twitter move – a fake account.
And check out this beautiful contradiction (and see for yourself how many tweets are out there).
