CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va (WTVR) - Two people escaped a Chesterfield house fire after smelling smoke about 4: 10 a.m. Wednesday.

"The occupant exited the home, called 911 from a neighbor’s house and returned to assist another occupant from the home through a bedroom window," Chesterfield County Fire and EMS spokesman Lt. Jason Elmore said.

When fire crews arrived to the home on Lancers Boulevard, off Hull Street Road near Chippenham Parkway, they found smoke pouring from the basement.

"It took crews approximately 35 minutes to get the fire under control," Elmore said. "The home suffered heavy fire damage in the basement along with smoke and heat damage throughout the first floor of the home."

Fire investigators said the fire was caused by "combustible material" left too close to a wood stove.

"Fire officials would like to remind citizens to keep all combustibles at least three feet away from any supplemental heating device," Elmore said.
