SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) - Spotsylvania Police are looking for a man who shot a store clerk during a Saturday morning robbery.

Police responded to a call for a robbery around 3:20 a.m., at a Fas Mart located on the 11600 block of Brock Road.

Police say the suspect entered the store and was pretending to purchase something. When the clerk turned away, the suspect shot the clerk in the head twice and fled the scene with an undetermined amount of cash and merchandise. The clerk was working alone.

"This whole incident happened 90 seconds or less," Captain Jeffery Pearce of the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's office said. "She was not resisting.  There was no adversarial conversation between them or anything.  He fully walked in there and intended to shoot her."

The 32-year-old female victim was transported to Mary Washington Hospital E.R. and upon arrival transferred by air ambulance to VCU Medical Center Trauma unit. She is currently listed in serious condition, but is expected to live.

The incident has people in the community shaken.

"I have never heard of anything like this around here," Jennifer Staiger said.  "I hope they catch the person."

Shane Bloom heard sirens from police at the convenience store and went to scope out the scene. He was shocked by what he found. Bloom said the clerk was well known in the area for being very friendly.

"She cares about everybody. And you know, Fas Mart is lucky to have an employee like that," said Bloom.

Spotsylvania County police have teamed up with Orange County to track down the suspect.

The suspect is described as a white male approximately  25-30 years old, 5’4”-5’7” feet tall, 160-170 lbs with a distinctive black goatee. Last seen wearing a dark hoodie and jeans, armed with an unknown caliber handgun.

Sheriff's deputies believe the incident may have been random due to the location of the store, which is close to a busy intersection off of Route 3. Police have not revealed whether the suspect acted alone or not.
