Lewis Ginter Botanical GardenRICHMOND, Va. (WTVR)–If you needed something to help you think about spring and the warmer promises that lay ahead, this local contest is what you need.

Since at least 1926 there has been an idea that the 50-acres of property in Richmond’s north side should be used as a botanical garden. Around the 1980s a dedicated group finally harvested that idea and took up the task of converting the massive plot into what we know as the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden.

And it’s not just locals who recognize its beauty. The garden was just recently nominated for USA Today’s “10Best Reader’s Choice” contest for Best Public Garden in North America.

Lewis Ginter joins a list of public gardens as far away as Victoria, B.C. or Hawaii and as close by as Pennsylvania. See the full list here.

The public can vote for favorite gardens daily online through March 31 at http://www.10best.com/awards/travel/best-public-garden/

Winners will be announced April 2, 2014.

The garden hopes that you will “Think Spring” and cast a vote for the best public garden. It’s a great opportunity for them, and the region to stand out in the crowd of such other worthy competition.

You do not have to provide an email address which means votes can be cast once daily from each of multiple devices (vote on your computer, phone, tablet, etc.).

Online the garden’s vision is stated as “Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden will become one of the top ten public gardens in the U.S., known for the quality of its displays, facilities and programs.”

To that end, we say they’ve bloomed.
