HENRICO, Va. (WTVR)--A snow day that brought hordes of school-free kids out to the slopes wasn't without injury.
Henrico Fire Department assisted a child Monday afternoon, in the West End.
Multiple families where out on the hill on Lauderdale and Three Chopt Road, across from the shopping center where the Pantina Grill is located, when a child was injured.
First responders brought the child up the hill on a stretcher to keep him stable. The child was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital with no serious injuries, Capt. Rosenbaum said.
Officials warn to avoid sledding near streets, as that is where most sledding accidents occur.
Here are some tips that experts have for safer sledding.
•Select a hill that is not too steep and has a long flat area at the bottom for your kids to glide to a stop.
•Avoid hillsides that end near ponds, trees, fences, or other hazards
•Choose hills that are snowy rather than icy. If a child falls off a sled, icy slopes make for hard landings.
•Always try to have your kids sled during the daytime, when visibility is better. If they do go sledding at night, make sure the hillside is well lit and all potential hazards are visible
