(WTVR) -- A federal judge strikes down a ban in Texas on same-sex marriages. It is the latest in a rapid-fire series of rulings on the issue, including one handed down here in Virginia.

The latest ruling made Wednesday, is being called a huge step forward for same-sex couples hoping to one day marry in Texas. The Lone Star State ruling, in particular, came as a surprise for many as Texas is considered conservative.

The Texas ruling appears to be that of a national trend as five other states: Utah, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Ohio and Virginia are also looking to change the marriage ban.

Those against doing away with the ban have argued marriages should only be between a man and a woman. But on the other side of the argument are those in favor of same-sex unions who have said everyone has the right to marry whomever they want.

The ruling in Texas, much like the one here in Virginia earlier this month, does not mean same-sex couples can get married just yet. The decision is pending the outcome of appeals.

However same-sex marriages are now legal in 17 states and the District of Columbia.
