(CNN) — A federal judge has struck down a ban on same-sex marriage in Texas, ruling Wednesday it has no “rational relation to a legitimate government purpose.”

The decision is the latest in a series of federal and state court moves to overturn current laws forbidding gay and lesbians from legal wedlock.

The judge, however, stayed enforcement of his decision pending appeal.

That means same-sex couples in Texas, for the time being, cannot get married.

U.S. District Judge Orlando Garcia has served since 1994, and was appointed by William Clinton.
