HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) – Hanover authorities said Washington-Henry Elementary School was briefly on lockdown after a report of a man with a machete on a road near campus Thursday afternoon.

Hanover County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Lt. Chris Whitley said the incident happened around 2:30 p.m. while the school was in the process of dismissing students.

As a result, students were locked down on buses as a precaution.

Deputies said a surveyor, described as a white male in his 60s, was using the machete as part of his work near the school. He was never on school property.

Officials said no students were in any danger and that the lockdown only lasted about 10 minutes.
