KIEV, Ukraine — A shaky truce crumbled in Kiev, Ukraine early Thursday morning, when gunfire erupted in Independence Square–an area deemed ground zero for anti-government protestors. At least 26 people, from protestors to police, are reported dead.

It’s unclear what prompted the gunfire, but reporters in the area said it happened as security forces were moving away from the area.

Thursdays violent developments came just hours after President Viktor Yanukovych announced a truce, which opposition leaders agreed to abide by. Later today, European foreign ministers will hold an emergency meeting in Brussels to try and find some way to end the violence.
