The Historic Beacon Theatre’s official grand opening week features the Blind Boys of Alabama Sunday, February 23, doors will open at 6pm, music starts at 6:30pm. Other performers include Robert Randolph and the Family Band Thursday, March 13; An Evening with the Temptations Saturday, April 12 and Clint Black Saturday, April 26, doors open 6pm, music starts at 6:30. Virginia Union University department of Languages & Literature presents The Sankofa Film Festival, five days, five films starting Monday, February 24, 5:30 opening ceremony, films shown at 6pm “Sankofa”; Tuesday – February 25, “I am Slave”; Wednesday – February 26, “Celluloid Slavery: The Challenges of presenting Slavery on the Big Screen” a panel of scholars, filmmakers and actors discussion; Thursday – February 27, “42” and Friday – February 28 “Slavery By Another Name”, films shown at L. Richmond Bluegrass Marathon Jam, Saturday, February 22, noon – midnight at the Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen, featuring 28 Regional Bluegrass Bands, singers and pickers are invited to come join at the Marathon Jam Benefits Fisher House, a home away from home for families of American Soldiers recuperating at McGuire Veterans Hospital.
