(CNN) – They already were the world’s best in ice dancing twice. Now — in a first for an American pair — Meryl Davis and Charlie White hold Olympic gold.

Davis and White won Monday’s free dance portion of the competition in Sochi, Russia, clinching the top spot by more than 4 points over training partners and main rivals Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, the Canadian pair that won gold in the 2010 Vancouver games.

Virtue and Moir, who train with Davis and White in Michigan, won silver. Russia’s Elene Ilinykh and Nikita Katsalapov took bronze.

Davis and White, the 2011 and 2013 world champions in the event, entered the free dance with a 2.56-point lead over the Canadians, having topped Sunday’s short dance portion.

The gold is the United States’ first in Olympic ice dancing.
