RVA Street Art Festival presents check to beaten, robbed security guard

RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – Organizers of the RVA Street Art Festival presented a check to the Security Officer Jack Newsom, who was violently attacked on Nov. 23, 2013.

The $8,000 check was given to Newsom in front of the Light of Human Kindness installation, the face of what became the RVA Street Festival that transformed 5.5 industrial acres of the former GRTC bus depot.

The money was crowd sourced after the attack left the 66-year-old security guard black and blue, with a swollen neck and face.

He had a difficult time recollecting what happened to him that night.  Sadly, he said, the beating almost cost him his life. The thief got away with was $60.
