RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) -- When the temperature drops, many reach to turn up the thermostat.

And that means you're spending more money, whether its electricity for your heat pump or propane for your gas logs.

Dominion Virginia Power said dropping your thermostat just one degree will save you three percent on your power bill.

But for really big savings over the long run, Billy Amacker with James River Air Conditioning said you should inspect your home. First, start in the attic and crawl spaces.

Amacker said a home audit, where they use a blower and a thermal imaging gun to detect heat and cooling leaks, is the first step to big savings.

By putting insulation in to stop the leaks, you will begin to save money and have a much more energy-efficient home.

Le-Ha Anderson, with Dominion Virginia Power said using their Budget Billing Program, allows users to know how much they will be paying each month, instead of having higher bills during peak season.

Anderson said Dominion Virginia Power also has programs in place, to help their customers decrease their energy usage. Click here for Dominion's energy saving tips.
