CAROLL GARDENS, Brooklyn (WPIX) – Brooklyn parents woke up to slippery roads or unplowed streets last week, but were still expected to send their children to school Wednesday morning.

With wind chills making temperatures feel below zero, many questioned why Mayor Bill de Blasio and Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina kept New York City schools open.

As a result, some parents kept their kids home and let them go out and play in the snow instead.

Some parents said they had originally planned to send their kids to school, but when buses were late, they changed their minds.

“I’m surprised the schools are opened,” one parent said. “It’s not good weather for the kids to be out.”

According to a department of education spokeswoman, attendance Wednesday was just 47.1 percent. That’s the lowest since a snowstorm in 2011.

Did parents make the right call to keep their children home from school? Do you think it was irresponsible — or a good idea to keep their kids safe?
