HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) – “Today is a good day,” Henrico County supervisor Tyrone Nelson said about the Central Virginia Waste Management Authority (CVWMA) unanimous decision to not allow the East End Landfill on Darbytown Road permission to expand.

Nelson represents the Varina district where the landfill is located.

Last month Henrico County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously against changing the regional plan to allow landfill expansion.

“Today’s decision is the culmination of efforts by county staff, state legislators and the Board of Supervisors coming together on this issue,” Nelson said. He noted that there had been operational problems at the landfill for several years.

Henrico County issued the landfill notices of state environmental violations in 2009 and 2011 for the landfill’s accumulation of coal fly ash, waste tires and contaminated soil at the facility in violation of the county’s zoning ordinance.

Deputy Henrico County Manager Randall R. Silber said the landfill expansion was not needed because there was more than enough space to meet the need at landfill around the region.

“CVWMA staff has reported there is sufficient landfill capacity to meet the region’s construction and demolition debris needs for 117 years,” Silber said in a statement. “Henrico County does not need the additional capacity and does not want it at the East End Landfill.”
