RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) - While many stayed inside while the snow fell in our area on Tuesday, others had no choice but to drive the roads throughout Central Virginia.

"I'm on my way to work," said driver Terri Jarrett, who had to commute from Yale to Richmond Tuesday night.

The snow accumulations can make for a difficult commute for drivers, which is why VDOT crews were busy treating the roads to help melt the snow Tuesday. However, VDOT Spokeswoman, Lindsay LeGrand said crews can't plow roads until there is an inch or two of accumulation.

"If we plow a very small amount of snow it's very easy for more snow to come and cover that area," said LeGrand.

LeGrand also said if crews plow too early, it could ingrain the ice into the pavement.

Along with VDOT, the City of Richmond also has to wait to plow roads. DPW Spokeswoman, Sharon North said crews can't plow until there's three inches of snow to prevent damaging the trucks.

If that much doesn't accumulate, North said crews will do a light removal, focusing on the primary roads first.
