RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – The U.S. Secret Service issued a warning Friday to consumers and business owners about counterfeit $100 bills turning up in Virginia and nearby states.

If the serial number on the front of the $100 bill between the two $100 logos matches one of the above five number and letter combinations, it could be a fake and you need to contact police.

Additionally, be sure to turn the bill over and examine  the right hand corner, just above the 100.

Look for a small 77 just above the second zero in 100. If your bill matches this number, and has one of those five serial numbers, contact your local police and the Secret Service.

“Businesses and consumers should always verify Federal Reserve Notes using the enhanced security features such as the embedded security thread, color-shifting ink, and watermark,” Secret Service officials said in a news release.

The Secret Service said these bills have been found in states along the I-95 corridor.
