Pilot rescued after Navy jet crashes off Va. coast

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WTVR) — The Coast Guard says the pilot of a Navy FA-18E jet that crashed Wednesday afternoon has been rescued.

WTKR reports that the FA-18 super hornet is from Strike Fighter Squadron 143 (VFA-143) assigned to Carrier Wing 7 at Oceana Naval Air Station.

Officials said the pilot was able to eject before the jet crashed around 2:35 p.m. about 50 miles off the coast of Virginia Beach

The pilot was rescued by a Navy helicopter and taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. At last check at 5 p.m., officials said he was in critical condition.

Last week a Navy helicopter carrying five crew members crashed into the Atlantic about 20 miles east of Cape Henry. Three sailors were killed and two others were injured in the crash.
