RICHMOND, Va (WTVR) -  A ribbon cutting marked the opening of the city's first middle school since Ronald Reagan was president. The new Martin Luther King Junior Middle School had its grand opening Monday morning.

The state of the art facility is designed to hold 800 students.

Richmond Mayor Dwight Jones said the opening of this school demonstrates the city's commitment to Richmond's more impoverished areas. He also said this $40 million investment should create the type of environment that inspires the city's youth to learn.

Next year, the city will open Richmond's first high school in 40 years when it opens the new Huguenot High School on Forest Hill Avenue.
