RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – If you think today is cold, just wait until Tuesday.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it’s coming.

Another blast of Arctic air will arrive behind a storm system sweeping through our region on Monday, resulting in very cold weather (again) for the Mid-Atlantic.  Tuesday morning will be in the teens, with afternoon highs not even getting out of the mid-20s!

Here is one view of the Arctic invasion late Monday into early Tuesday (European model. Everything north of the white bold line is sub-freezing. Everything in purple is sub-zero):

If this data verifies (I’m seeing mid-range data showing Tuesday afternoon temperatures in Richmond in the lower 20s at best), this could be our coldest day since 2009.

Although it’s not unusual for us to get into the teens at least once every Winter (see the 2011 and 2009 mentions in the graphic above), Wednesday morning will dip dangerously low into the single digits and lower teens in central Virginia. That is well below the average low for this time of the year of 28 degrees.

We may briefly reach the freezing mark for a Wednesday afternoon high with help from mostly sunny skies.

Prepare for cold nights with these tips:
