CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) -- Neighbors along Providence Road in Chesterfield are on edge after New Year's celebrations got off to an early and potentially dangerous start.
CBS 6 News reporter Sandra Jones spoke to a homeowner who discovered a bullet in the side of his home.
The man, who wished to remain anonymous, said he had just put his son to bed and was sitting in the living room when he heard a loud pop and felt a vibration.
"All of the sudden we heard a loud pop hit the side of the house and my son came running out," the homeowner said. "I was just worried because of the Fourth of July case and [the bullet hit] right underneath my son's bedroom."
The homeowner said he called police about an hour before midnight.
"They were very prompt and told to stay inside of the house until somebody got there," he said.
Minutes later, a forensic unit arrived and told the homeowner the bullet may have come from a 22-caliber gun.
"Even when the police officers were here, they could hear random celebratory fire back there,” he said. “And one of the police officers asked me to stop underneath the tree just to be safe."
Chesterfield police say they are searching for a suspect in this case.
Constant Ragland, who lives nearby, said she hears gunfire every holiday and does not feel safe.
"A lot of times when festivities take place, you almost anticipate some being irresponsible and shooting of a gun," Ragland said.
And Ragland is not alone. Jimmy Kacmarski, who also lives on Providence Road, said he is sick of the “stupidity.”
“People just don't have good ideas on what guns...How to handle a gun and all," Kacmarski said. "It could have come from here -- or anywhere around. It didn't have to be in this neighborhood."
The home is about seven miles away from the Swift Creek Reservoir in Brandermill where a stray bullet killed Brendon Mackey on the Fourth of July. Police are still asking for information that can lead them to the gunman who killed Brendon.
