CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WTVR) – Charlottesville police are investigating a “knockout game”-style attack on the Downtown Mall earlier this month.

WCAV reports that officers were dispatched to the mall around 2 a.m. on Dec. 20 to investigate a report of an unconscious man near the Blue Light Grill. That’s where they found a woman that said three African American men had attacked her and another man.

Officers said the male victim offered more info to police on Dec. 21. Then,  the female victim contacted police to follow up on Dec. 29.

Police said that an overnight patrol officer had been working the case. However, the police chief announced Monday that the General Investigation Bureau would take over the case after he reviewed the initial report and additional information from the victims.

WCAV reports that two detectives have now been assigned to the case.
