RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR)–Ah, what to do with that browning Christmas tree and those discarded electronics.

The city is offering a solution.

On Saturday, January 11, 2014, the City’s Department of Public Works will sponsor the fourth annual “Bring One for the Chipper” Christmas tree recycling program.  In addition to Christmas trees, the event will include electronics recycling, document shredding and donations of clothing and small household items to Goodwill Industries.

“Bring One for the Chipper 2013” will take place in the paved lot at 1710 Robin Hood Road (northeast corner of Robin Hood Road and North Boulevard), from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on January 11.

The event began in 2010 as part of Mayor Dwight C. Jones’ City-wide sustainability initiatives. Recycling keeps the Christmas trees and electronics equipment out of landfills, which helps reduce the city’s carbon footprint.

Residents can bring up to five boxes of paper for shredding.  Electronic items that will be accepted for recycling include printers, computer monitors, radios and microwaves.

Televisions will be disposed at a cost of $7 each.  There is no charge for all other items.

Residents can bring their trees to the event or drop them off in advance from December 26 through January 10 at the following locations:

  • East Richmond Road Convenience Center, 3800 East Richmond Road
  • Richmond Southside Transfer Station, 3520 N. Hopkins Road.
  • New Generations Credit Union at 1700 Robin Hood Road–trees can be dropped off in the lot behind

Trees that are curbside will be collected from January 13 through January 30 for residents who contact the 311 Call Center.

Residents are advised that trees left out with their supercan may not be picked up on regular trash collection days, as a separate truck is needed to collect them.
