JARRATT, Va. – A Petersburg man is charged with involuntary manslaughter, discharging a firearm in an occupied building and reckless handling of a firearm in connection to the September death of a Sussex County teenager.

Garrick Lewis, 24, turned himself in Nov. 18, according to Virginia State Police. A Sussex County grand jury recently indicted Lewis on the charges.

“Shortly after 3 p.m. on Sept. 8, 2013, the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office and Virginia State Police responded to a residence in the 26000 block of Jefferson Road in the Jarratt community of Sussex County,” Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller wrote in an email. “A 15-year-old male, Tyler Givens, of Jarratt, had been shot at the residence. He died at the scene. A handgun was recovered at the scene.”

This is a developing story.
