NEW YORK, NY – A New Zealand man had a first name, a city and a tireless romantic drive that — with the help of social media — put him back in touch with a stranger he connected with one crazy night in Hong Kong.
It was a one-in-a-million international missed connection made possible by Facebook – and possibly killed by it as well.
Reese McKee, 25, met “Katie from DC” last New Year’s Eve when he found her alone, crying on the side of the road, he told the New Zealand Herald. They spent the final hours of 2012 drinking and dancing before she finally went her own way, telling McKee only, “find me.”
The memory of that night drove him to post a photo he took of Katie on Facebook, along with a heartfelt message in hopes that someone who knew her would help put them in contact.
The Facebook post inspired an article on the Herald website and the fairy tale search was on its way to going viral.
“The thing bloody exploded. God, the article went everywhere,” McKee told the paper.
Turns out the world is much smaller since the advent of social media, and Katie couldn’t hide if she wanted to from hordes of well-meaning romantics. Soon people were bombarding Katies in the DC area on Facebook and Twitter, and they did indeed find the young woman in the picture.
Sadly, McKee is not yet selling the rights to movie producers just yet, as Katie, likely freaked out by the onslaught of messages in her inboxes has “sorta taken all her public profiles [offline] for a little bit.”
McKee says he has even been offered an appearance on a US talk show, but has declined.
