LATHROP, Calif. (CBS) – Paying for college for your child can be expensive, but a California couple is getting a little help because their son did the right thing. While on his most recent trip to his neighborhood grocery store, 16-year-old Matthew Hernandez found a wallet in the parking lot.
He opened it up and found a stack of $100 bills inside – $2,000 total.
Matthew didn’t even think twice about keeping the money. He went into the store and tracked down the rightful owner, who was inside looking for his wallet.
“I had to give it back, so, I had to do the right thing,” Hernandez said. “I know a lot of people that would have kept it, at the time, even adults would have kept it.”
After hearing the story, a California business owner was so inspired by Matthew’s honesty that he decided to give him a $6,000 scholarship, along with a Playstation 4 and a paid internship. Matthew plans to use the scholarship money to go to college and study law enforcement.
