RICHMOND, Va, (WTVR) - As a wintry mess plans to make its way to Central Virginia, VDOT crews have been preparing for the event for several days.

"They have been applying some early pretreatment to the roads, mostly the interstates,I-95 north of the James River, I-295, I-64," said Richmond VDOT Spokeswoman, Lindsay LeGrand.

LeGrand said crews are also on standby, monitoring what is going on 24/7 for the storm.

"We do have some crews on standby in other districts and they will be able to be dispatched to some of our districts in the northern and western parts of the state just to help out just in case something does happen," said LeGrand.

Along with crews prepping for the roads, VDOT is also monitoring things at the traffic operation center.

"They are actually watching the roads at all times, so if there's anything that happens on the roads we actually see it real time," LeGrand told CBS 6's Chelsea Rarrick.

LeGrand also reminds people to be extra cautious if you are out on the roads, but said the best thing is to stay indoors.
