EVANSVILLE, Indiana (WEHT) - An Indiana police officer got a bear hug and big thank you from a little girl after he rescued her lost teddy bear from a busy highway.

After stopped to pick up the bear, Evansville Police Sgt. Jason Cullum was able to catch up with the family down the road.

"This is the first bear I ever had," eight-year-old Nikki Mayo said about Chocolate, the teddy bear she'd had since she was four. "I'm so happy that he found him."

Cullum said he was happy about the attention his good deed has received.

"We know the importance a teddy bear plays in society. They save the world sometimes. And, on that day the teddy bear needed saving," he said. "This has really turned into something way more than I thought it would have. I appreciate it, personally, that people are giving it positive attention. Seeing her holding that bear, not just holding it, but hugging it like she's never going to let it go, I'm really glad that I stopped."
