University alerts students after robbery, carjacking near campus

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) - Police are looking for a group of men who robbed and car jacked a Virginia State University student, according to an alert sent to students.

"At approximately 7 p.m., December 2, 2013, a group of female VSU students were approached by several males in the vicinity of 2nd Ave between campus and Ettrick Deli," the alert stated. "The males were wearing dark hoodies and bandanas. The males ran away when the females thought it was a joke.  It is now believed that one of the males may have possessed a weapon."

About 40 minutes later, a VSU student was robbed at gunpoint by three men wearing hoodies and bandanas in the vicinity of Parking Lot # 7.

"The three males took his credit cards, VSU 1Card, forced him into his car at gunpoint and instructed him to drive to the Wells Fargo Bank in Colonial Heights.  The student was able to escape from the car and was assisted by passersby in alerting the police," the alert to student continued.

Witnesses said they saw a man jump from a Suburban yelling, "Help me!"

The alert to students described the suspects as:

  • Black men
  • Between 18 - 25 years old
  • All wore black jackets and hoodies
  • One man wore a red bandana
  • All three men carried weapons

VSU sent the alert to students via email about 4 a.m. Tuesday.
