RICHMOND, Va (WTVR) -- More than 40 million Americans, including 1.2 million Virginians are expected to travel for the holiday.  The vast majority of travelers are projected to hit the road.

Sgt. Thomas Molnar with Va State Police said during this same time last year 14 people died on Virginia roadways.  Eleven of the fatalities involved the person not wearing a safety belt.
Already on Wednesday, there were several crashes police responded to across the area.  On Lucks Lane in Midlothian one person was transported to VCU Medical Center, following a single car collision.

"We do see a significant increase in crashes, obviously with the increase in the number of people traveling," Sgt. Molnar said.  "But because of the weather we are going to see a number of crashes this afternoon."

AAA is reminding drivers to be prepared before heading out, in order to be ready for  Mother Nature's unpredictability.

"Dress in layers," Martha Meade with AAA Mid-Atlantic said.  "Just imagine if you were stranded for half an hour, or an hour or more when you get into this heavy Thanksgiving traffic and you add weather on top of it."

Before heading out you may want to download the location sharing app called glympse.  The app lets you share your exact location in real-time.  For more information on glympse click here.
