UPDATE: Police ID slain VSU student; search for ‘person of interest’

ETTRICK, Va. (WTVR) -- A Virginia State University student was shot and killed at the University Apartments near campus Thursday night.

Eric Wilkins, 22, of Hopewell, was a junior at the school, a VSU spokesman confirmed Friday morning.

Wilkins was shot during a verbal altercation with another person at the complex located half-a-mile from campus along the 4000 block of J. Mitchell Jones Drive. The shooting happened about 11:30 Thursday night. Wilkins' body was discovered outside in the area of a parking lot and sidewalk.

Chesterfield Police have taken the lead in the investigation.

A person of interest has been identified, however the search continues for that person.

The apartments are considered off the Virginia State University campus, but are exclusively for VSU students.

The university is operating on an normal schedule Friday.
