RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) --  It’s like campaign season for Richmond Mayor, Dwight Jones.  He’s trying to get as much support as possible for his pitch to move a baseball stadium to Shockoe Bottom.

Since unveiling his plan, Jones has been making the rounds to various civic and business groups, urging them to contact city council members, who will ultimately decide.

However, Thursday night, council members turned their attention to city residents. Many voiced their differing opinions about the mayor’s plan.

“This is not a good form of economic development. The best return is education,” said one resident.

“I urge council. Take a chance. This is an amazing opportunity to transform a historic part of the city,” said another city resident.

Council members say this plan isn’t even at first base yet. They’re still trying to see if the mayor’s numbers add up.

While Jones still has a lot of convincing to do in the city, outside city lines, minds have already been made up about his plan.

Leaders in Chesterfield and Henrico say they will not fund this move.  Below are the statements sent to CBS 6.

“Henrico County wishes the City of Richmond the best in this endeavor,”
said Henrico County Manager John Vithoulkas.

“We have always worked together with the city as a strong regional partner.  We are supportive of  the city’s efforts for a new stadium at any location they believe is in the best interest of the city, their residents,  and the Greater Richmond Region, "Lou Lassiter, Chesterfield County Assistant Administrator, said.

City Council members say they will not vote on the Mayor’s plan any time soon.

They will likely take up a vote next year.
