RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) -- A piece of luggage caused a nearly hour-long lockdown at Virginia's Capitol Square Wednesday afternoon.
The Richmond police bomb squad responded to the Virginia Governor's Mansion, according to Richmond Police spokesman Gene Lepley.
People inside various buildings around the square were told to stay inside as technicians examined the luggage.
CBS 6 News reporter Joe St. George had to shelter in place inside the General Assembly building as he was covering a news conference.
Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell was working "as normal" during the lockdown in the Patrick Henry building, according to spokesman Tucker Martin.
Martin said the Executive Protection Unit was in contact with state and capitol police about the incident.
Capitol police said a piece of unattended luggage near the Stonewall Jackson statue prompted the lockdown. The luggage was checked out and deemed harmless.
Authorities are trying to find out who owns the luggage.
