CHESTERFIELD, Va. (WTVR)--Police say it doesn’t matter where you live, criminals are always lurking and looking for an opportunity.

Police emphasize that criminals are working to get their hands on something that’s quick, easy and valuable.

A recent rash of crimes happened overnight in a Chester neighborhood where Helaine and Robert Meadow live. Chesterfield police told CBS 6 News that several unlocked cars were broken into in the Bermuda Orchard subdivision along Koyoto Drive and Koyoto Court.

A police source said that a gun was among the items stolen.

“It makes me feel frightened. I wouldn’t want to see that gun turned on some innocent victim, " Meadows explained. Other neighbors say it’s a reminder that no matter where you live, you should never let your guard down.

Steve Neal, a police veteran of thirty years says in these kinds of crimes, the thieves are just waiting for people to slip up and leave valuables in their cars.

The hassle of becoming a victim isn’t the only thing to consider. Neal says once a thief gets into your car, you have to ask if you are leaving yourself open to other crimes.

"Exactly what items did you leave in your automobile? If they have access to your car, they may have access to your bank accounts. They may have access to your home, so you really want to be cautious as to what items are left in the vehicle, " Neal explained.

By news time, Chesterfield police confirmed they had made an arrest in the case. When more details on the suspect become available, we will update the information. So far, police aren’t saying how many cars were broken into and exactly what items were taken.
