DINWIDDIE COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) -- He went out for an early morning food run after celebrating Virginia State homecoming festivities with his friends, but Devon Pulley never made it back home.

Troopers say he was hit and killed by a wrong-way driver.

With an emotional sigh, Krystal Granderson spoke about Pulley.  About how they dated for ten years.  About she never thought it would come to an end so suddenly, so early.

"I really wish I could tell him one more time, really, how much I loved him,” Granderson said.  "He was my back bone.  He was my best friend."

Early Sunday Pulley went out for food for his friends, driving on 460 east in the Sutherland area of Dinwiddie County.

"I laid down about 4 a.m. and heard a smash," said Timmy Bailey, who lives near the crash site.

Troopers say he was hit head-on, by a woman driving a Jeep going the wrong way.

"It's not supposed to be this way, but things happen,” said Pulley’s grandmother, Helen Bloomfield.  “I put it in God’s hands."

Pulley was a Virginia State University graduate, described by his grandmother as a young man who didn't have a disrespectful bone in his body.

"I’m gonna’ miss him,” Bloomfield said.  “He was my only grandchild.  I had 26 beautiful years.  I thank God for that."

She fondly remembers a special date she had with Devon: his senior prom, she was his date.

"Grandma went to eliminate the other ladies,” she said, laughing.   “We got pictures, a standing ovation."

And grandma says while a deadly accident can take Devon from her physically, it cannot erase her memories of the good times they shared.

Her grandson’s tragic death has pointed her in the direction of VCU Medical Center, where she says she'll bring a message of healing to the other woman involved in the crash.

"I’m going to MCV to let her know who I am and that I pray for her,” said Bloomfield.  “I forgive her. God doesn't make mistakes."

Troopers say they will consult with the Dinwiddie County Commonwealth’s Attorney in reference to charges.
