LYNCHBURG, Va. (WTVR) — A Virginia woman is facing charges for allegedly vandalizing a World War I memorial in Lynchburg.

WDBJ reports that police arrested 21-year-old Jessica McCrickard for breaking the bayonet off the bronze doughboy statue.

Police said the iconic statue’s bayonet was later tossed into the James River.

McCrickard  is cooperating with police in an attempt to recover the bayonet.

Police arrested Jessica McCrickard two days ago. Officers say she vandalized the iconic doughboy statue at Lynchburg’s Monument Terrace about two weeks ago.

Officials said an anonymous tip led police to the suspect.
