Arrest after 2 armed robberies near VCU

RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) - Two armed robberies occurred near Virginia Commonwealth University's main campus just minutes apart early Sunday morning.

The first robbery was reported to both VCU and Richmond police around 1 a.m. near the 1100 block of West Main Street.  Police said the victim was hit in the face and robbed at gunpoint by three black males.  The victim could not provide further details or a suspect description.

Another robbery happened 15 minutes later near the 000 block of South Morris Street.  According to police, the victim was robbed by two suspects at gunpoint, taking his wallet and cellphone.

One of the suspects, described as a black male wearing a white shirt and baggy pants, fled down Morris Street and then turned onto Park Avenue.  Police found a firearm after he was apprehended.

Police said the second suspect, described as a black male wearing a white t-shirt, baggy pants and possibly an orange hat, was last seen heading down Park Avenue.

Both VCU and Richmond police have stepped up patrols in that area.
