LYNCHBURG, Va. (WTVR) – Vandals sometimes tag some of Richmond’s historic monuments with graffiti, but things were taken to a new extreme in Lynchburg.

Officials said vandals hacked off the bayonet from one of the city's most famous monuments.

The Listening Post statue was constructed in 1925 to honor of Lynchburg soldiers who fought and died in World War I.

Some broke off the bayonet last year, too, but left it at the base of the statue. As a result, it was quickly repaired with a $200,000 donation from Liberty University.

Leaders said that the repair could be much more expensive if the bayonet is not recovered.
