RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – Police hope to combat identity theft by encouraging you to shred old documents. As part of Crime Prevention Month, law enforcement will host free document shredding events around Central Virginia.

Here is the schedule:

Shred events

Here’s what you need to know:

  • All shredding events run between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
  • Limit is up to two boxes (average copy paper box size) or three paper grocery bags of documents
  • No recyclable paper, such as telephone books or magazines, will be accepted.

“Identity theft is a growing problem, so citizens are encouraged to clean out personal documents and bring them to this shredding event,” police said in a statement publicizing the event. “Identity theft can wreak havoc in a person’s life by ruining a person’s credit or wiping out entire bank accounts, and it can take months or even years to clear one’s name and financial records.  Prevention and awareness are two crime-fighting tools that can help citizens deter identity thieves.”
