Day two of the big government shutdown in Washington DC couldn’t stop or even slow the rain of ringers in Fulton Bottom, where some of the best horseshoe pitchers in the region gather every day.

“It’s like one big family,” said one of the pitchers at the city’s Gillies Creek Park horsehoe complex.

This is where some of the state’s best play - guys who throw ringers 50 to 70 percent of the time.

But everyone is welcome. Young, old, black, white, male, female. Find out more, including directions, here:  http://www.richmondgov.com/parks/parkGilliesCreek.aspx

This park is one of Richmond’s best do-it-yourself recreations areas, with a BMX track, dodge ball fields, a good Frisbee golf track and the horseshoe pits largely maintained (and in some cases shaped) by those who use them.

There’s quite an interesting crew that plays horseshoes there. Check out our story, shot by photojournalist Andy Peterson, in the video player above.
