LYNCHBURG, Va. (WTVR) — A Virginia gun rights group calls Lynchburg’s policy for filing for concealed gun permits excessive and overly expensive.

The Associated Press reports the city pays police detectives overtime to vet permit applications. Additionally, folks who file for a permit have to shell out $50. That’s the   highest amount the police department can charge under state law.

However, Lynchburg police argued that detectives do the work because each ground for denying a permit must be investigated.

The work is done in overtime to allow detectives to focus on their primary duties during normal working hours.
