10 YEARS LATER: Hurricane Isabel survivors recall storm, damage

RICHMOND, Va (WTVR) -  It has been 10 years since Hurricane Isabel hit Virginia knocking down trees and knocking out electricity. The impact from Isabel left many parts of the Commonwealth and surrounding states in bad shape.  To make matters worse, 1.8 million Virginians were left in the dark.  The storms is also to blame for the death of 32 Virginians.

No hurricanes have threatened Virginia so far in 2013, but hurricane season is just halfway over.

Experts recommend you have an spare set of house and car keys made prior to a hurricane. They also suggest keeping an emergency supply kit, that includes:

  • Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation
  • Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
  • Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Whistle to signal for help
  • Dust mask to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
  • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
  • Manual can opener for food
  • Local maps
  • Cell phone with chargers, inverter or solar charger
