BWI tower struck by lightning, all flights grounded

(CNN) — Thunderstorms grounded planes at airports across the Northeast Thursday afternoon causing travel delays.

Lightning struck a tower at Baltimore Washington International Airport shutting down all air traffic, according to WJZ.

WJZ reports the strike happened around 3:15 p.m. and that all flights were subsequently canceled.

Ground stops were in effect for airports in Boston, Baltimore, Washington, Newark, New York and Philadelphia, according to the FAA.

The FAA reported departure delays of 1½ hours at Boston Logan International Airport, two hours at New York’s LaGuardia Airport, one hour at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and 45 minutes at New York’s JFK International Airport.
